Rhetoric of academic applications : Perspectives from Quentin Skinner’s Forensic Shakespeare

The tools of classical and Renaissance rhetoric that Quentin Skinner uses in his Forensic Shakespeare (2014) are here applied to a contemporary context. Skinner’s discussion might have a fairly direct value for a genre of writing that most academics today must master, namely the rhetoric of applications. They have been seldom discussed from a rhetorical perspective, although knowledge of rhetoric is highly valuable for applicants, evaluators and those deciding between applications. Skinner’s book contains both advices for applicants and discussions on both the criteria of application and the possibilities of their revisions in case of innovative applications. peerReviewed

Les constructions clivées dans les travaux écrits d'étudiants de français

Työn tavoitteena on tutkia erään ranskalle tyypillisen kielioppirakenteen käyttöä Suomessa. Tutkimme, kuinka ranskan kielen opiskelijat käyttävät kirjallisissa tuotoksissaan rakennetta nimeltään phrase clivée. Tutkittavat työt ovat Tampereen, Helsingin ja Jyväskylän yliopistoissa vuosina 1999–2013 toteutettuja kandidaatintutkielmia ja pro gradu- töitä. Tutkimukseen kerättiin yhteensä 129 työtä, jotka ovat kaikki saatavilla verkossa.Käytimme tutkimukseen ainoastaan verkkoaineistoa, koska näin aineisto oli helpommin koottavissaja analysoitavissa. Digital Games as a Source of English Vocabulary for Finnish Writers

The material for this paper comes from Finnish people who wrote about their experiences of the music of digital games. We collected 184 texts, all but one written in Finnish. There is relatively little code-switching into English at the clause level, but the vocabulary of the texts is influenced by English on a continuum from clearly English words such as comfy to established loanwords such as uniikki (‘unique’). We will consider how the influence of the English language used both in the games and in discussions about them characterizes the vocabulary of these texts and how the English language enables the authors to enter the game world. peerReviewed
